CLIENT SUCCESS STORIES

The Customer - CFC BANK LTD, KENYA
CFC Bank is a member of Kenya’s leading financial services group - CFC group leading the country’s services in Insurance., Stock broking and Investment & Commercial banking. The group has been active in the Kenyan financial sector since 1955 and was listed on the NSE in 1970. The group carries a strong reputation of adapting to IT to deliver a considerably higher value and efficiency of services to the local industry and have recently branched into Tanzania.

The Challenge
The recent challenges in the banking sector as a result of low yielding government treasury bonds and a regulatory pressure to review service-based incomes in a broader move to drive low cost lending, placed increased pressure on Kenyan banks to re-address their Retail strategy. As a result banks reviewed their current products and services offering in an effort to retain their existing customers as well as attract newer customers. This was further fuelled by the long-deliberated national EFT switch initiative (Kenswitch) under the auspices of the National Payments System driven by the Central Bank. A number of larger banks however, sought to emphasize their individual brand equity when investing in an ATM strategy. They expect to leverage of their differentiation in

  1. products & solutions,
  2. target customer segments and
  3. efficiencies in service and
  4. roll-out services faster and more efficiently in line with their individual vision and business strategy. A common initiative in a national switch, which offers commonality in services and product visibility, is seen to be inconsistent with this strategy.

The Solution
CFC have led the local industry with first-tomarket innovation in services such as “Free Banking on weekends”, internet based payroll services and a solid portfolio of corporate lending for a number of years. In line with the above challenges, thereby identifying a unique business model while reviewing their ATM project strategy. In addition to the traditional functionality such cash withdrawals, balance enquiry, bill payments, cash deposit and mobile top-ups, the bank wished to offer a unique value proposition to their corporate clients in delivering services through a premise deployed ATM business model. In addition they wanted to view the investment from a long-term perspective. This initiated the evaluation of all the solutions available in the local industry. These were from CR2/NCR, Oasis, Mosaic and Diebold.

After a 60 day evaluation period including site visits to physically view the solutions at work, CFC awarded the business to ComputerPoint Kenya for our solutions based on Wincor Nixdorf ATMs and the Opus ElectraATM switch. CFC's Quick Access products will soon hit the markets, providing their customers a significant value-add in raising customer satisfaction levels through a large network of ATMs. This new delivery channel will help CFC grow their depositor accounts and volumes. The Opus ElectraATM EFT switch solution runs off an Oracle RDBMS and is in use in leading banks in Asia and the USA. Opus is recognised as an industry leader in the retail delivery and payment industry.
